AACRE 2006 Ballot Agenda
AACRE supports and opposes the following ballot measures to be voted on.
No on Proposition 85
Support the safety and healthcare access of young women. Proposition 85 would prohibit an abortion for young women until 48 hours after their parents have been notified. We oppose Proposition 85 because of its impact on the health and safety of Asian Pacific American teens. In a survey of youth of color, confidentiality was prioritized above all other matters in reproductive health. Because sex is such a taboo topic among Asian Pacific American and especially immigrant families, one study found that more than half of surveyed young Asian Pacific Americanwomen were uncomfortable talking about sexual matters. It is critical that young women unable to discuss reproductive health issues with their parents have timely access to medical care and counseling. Proposition 85 will have a chilling effect on their reproductive rights, resulting in profound consequences for Asian Pacific American young women.
Yes on Proposition 86
Support Proposition 86 to save lives and reduce smoking. Proposition 86 increases taxes on cigarettes and cigarette products to fund vital and critical health care programs, including affordable and comprehensive health insurance coverage for all California children. A recent study by the California Department of Health Services found that Proposition 86 will prevent more than 700,000 kids now under the age of 17 from becoming smokers, save 300,000 lives from smoking-related deaths and will save more than $16 billion in healthcare costs. We support Proposition 86 in order to promote access to healthy lives and well-being for Asian Pacific American communities.
